HOUSE FOREIGN AFFAIRS
Welcome to Harvard Model Congress San Francisco 2019, and welcome to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs!
The Foreign Affairs Committee has an integral role in dealing with legislation that directly impacts the international diplomatic community. Examples of issues for which the Committee is responsible include foreign assistance, war powers, peacekeeping, embassy security, and public diplomacy.
You will tackle two briefing topics central to the Foreign Affairs Committee’s mission this year: 1) U.S.-Mexico relations and 2) South Sudan.
It is our hope that not only will you familiarize yourself with these briefing topics and your role in the committee, but that you will also gain an understanding of parliamentary procedure in the legislative branch, international diplomacy, and the efforts of our nation to navigate the complexity of foreign affairs. Along the way, you will have incredible opportunities to meet and work with other delegates from all around the world - we hope that you are excited!
Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns that you have, or if you would just like to introduce yourself! The Committee on Foreign Affairs is an especially intriguing one because of the nuanced, ever-changing nature of the world around us. We encourage you to start preparing now, whether it is by keeping up with the news or researching our committee.
We want to make this HMC experience the best that it can be for you, and we hope that you will leave the conference with a deeper understanding of foreign affairs, skills in debate and collaboration, and, of course, great memories. We cannot wait to meet you in January!
